Well, how do you know if he's sad in the first place? Maybe he just wants to process some things on his own?

i've already given him enough time to mope around pathetically but he ain't getting better on his own

I suppose talking to him is not an option to try and figure out what's wrong...

But usually I tend to ask three things. If they want space, if they want someone to listen (and listen alone), or if they want help trying to solve whatever is upsetting them.

Of course ultimately it is up to them to decide, but it helps to know they have you offering those options in case they need it.

As someone who enjoys a good fight, good food, and tends to coop up in his room every now and then when things get sour in an underworld, I'm sure he already knows you're there to care for him.
