By the time he reaches the Shadowlands, the drain of chakra leaves him pacing around the field of Doors, more frustrated than before. He can't find him. That tether between them stretches endlessly in an unseen direction, too vague to follow.]

[And within that illusionary space beyond the Shadowlands door, Naruto rages. He doesn’t know where this sudden fury comes from—only that it now consumes him hungrily, like a stray flame catching dry, brittle paper. With five tails streaming behind him, he prowls back and forth along the cliffs of Hokage Mountain. Where he has gone, thoughts steeped in anger and bitterness, Kurama cannot reach him. Naruto is alone, vulnerable to the Shadow that preys gleefully on his doubt.

He doesn’t emerge until the following day, naked. His clothes are little more than ashes now, dusting the surface of his father’s stone façade. All over his body, Naruto’s flesh is scarred from severe burns—skin still peeling painfully over fingertips and face as Kurama tries desperately to heal him. Once he’s certain that Sasuke is no where nearby, the blond begins the slow and laborious journey back to Stygia.]
