And you. It is a hard thing, for any of us, to be taken from our homes, our families, and be given into little care such as this.

I have some skills, at least, which may help. We seem not be given much by way of home and hearth to sustain ourselves.

I think we're all feeling that struggle, departed as we from our natural lands. [He lingers on that thought only a moment more, the difficulty of their situation all too ready to swallow him. Best to focus on looking forward.]

What sort of skills, if I can inquire? I'm more of an, ah, analytical and engineering expert. Still feeling out how useful that could be in this place.

Let me see... I can sew, cook, spin, weave, tend animals, butcher them too and preserve them, tend a field if I truly must, though I am not gifted at tilling the land properly, I can do it well enough if needs must. I know my numbers and letters, can keep accounts of all households and people that are to be fed, and so on. The usual running of a land, I suppose.

[ What all royals do, obviously. ]

You're far more of a survivalist than I am. [Perhaps a low bar to leap over, but he still means it as a compliment. His rather cloistered, academic life offered little in the way of practical skills.] I guarantee there'd be people who could benefit from your guidance. Would that be amiable to you? Teaching people these things?

[There's an itch of a question regarding how her highness came to know such practical things, but he tucks it away — for now. There's some sense of propriety still living in his mind.]

Of course, I am glad to help any who come to me. I would be glad to share my knowledge. My only concern is that I do not know what this land needs, particularly. Each plot of soil, each fibre, every animal, grows to suit what it knows best. I worry some of my skills may not... hold the same.

A compliment, I assure you. It's brutally come to my attention I should've dedicated more time on such skills. [Hindsight. Jayce thinks a moment, scratching at his chin unseen.] You bring up a good point — a direct translation might not be accessible. But your methodology, if we can replicate that and adapt it to new variables, then perhaps... [his thought trails off; he realizes he has little framework to reference.]

A queen isn't without her harrowing moments, I imagine. [He senses the room to overstep, but cedes to the tacit habit Viktor and Mel had struggled to instill within him — with momentary success.]

That's a good way to put it, [his smile softens his words,] sometimes I'll get a lucky break. Meeting you qualifies, my queen [—my queen? Jayce winces, it sounded better in his head—] — ah, Queen Gilia.
