( ping ping ping. or, y'know, whatever your phone chime is. the face of a man who looks like he's never smiled once in his entire life appears on your screen. you may have seen him before, while you were busy surviving a storm or battling reapers. no matter. you might as well bask in his impromptu company now, because his appearances are few, and his indulgences even fewer. )

Allow me to make this clear. For those of you who wonder still: I am the Hierarchy. You do not come to us; we summon, invite, and hire. Order is of the utmost importance if you wish to survive, and time is of the essence. Do not waste mine.

Your personal troubles are your own. If you expected us to hold your hand, do think again; there are far greater affairs to attend to, so do yourselves a favor, and look for soulmates. We've prepared an application for you, easily accessible from your device's home page. Should you need additional information, perhaps it's time for you to practice self-reliance.

However. If two characters already share a powerful bond and one incidentally touches the other's Tethers, it's an accidental done deal. You may thank Naruto's player for this.

Do... do they say something about that? Because he sure didn't, um, offer any kind of explanation with this? Whole thing?

If the only thing they tell us to do is look for "soulmates", doesn't that make it sound like a supposed necessity? At least in their eyes?

If it's a necessity, he didn't do a good job of selling the idea. Just dumping that on us and not... not telling us why is like. Why would we bother? Because he said so? No other reason?

Perhaps he's used to people simply following his orders without question.

[ A soft scoff. ] Notice he didn't stick around, either. Predictably, I suppose he wants us to acquiesce.

Mm, maybe. Not sure I like that.

[ Very unsure, so very unsure. ]

It's not like I feel inspired to go looking just because he said so.

[ Not that Silco doesn't appreciate being thrown to the wolves like this. After all, he would rather fight for every scrap than be handed a gift of information, but the soulmates... it truly offends him. ]

Look, pal, it would take a really long time to list all the parts of this I don't like.

[ The being dead part, the reapers, the storm, being dead, a weird and frightening city, strange people telling him to look for soulmates, being dead, the lack of anywhere decent to shack up for a few nights, having to find a real person job, and did he mention being dead? Because being dead happened to be a big one. ]

But going through all of that before getting to this place and the only advice the top dog here offers is "find a soulmate" is just. Offensive. I kinda wish he hadn't even bothered?

[ A sound that might be close to a laugh. ] You and me both. They tried to take me to work in the forges.

[ Should Bruno know what that means? No. ~~He grew up in the mines.~~ His tone says that it's offensive, something about it sounds personal. ]

I do agree. If this is so necessary, then perhaps a better...presentation would be welcomed? Even I could do better, and I think it's nonsense.

Forges? Was that where they were... going to drag us?

[ He hadn't even thought to ask about it. He'd been going from high-key panic to low-key panic the entire time. ]

Uh, y-yeah. Well. Maybe someone else will figure out why it matters and do a better job.

Supposedly. That's what the Reaper told me, when it ripped me from my resting place, anyway.

[ His tone implies there's a shrug. ]

Well, regardless, we'll have to figure it out ourselves. If nothing else, they certainly put a lot of stock in self-reliance. [ That sounds amused. ]

Mm, sure, but a... I dunno, I still think like. A So You're Dead booklet for new folks would have been a tiny bit helpful.

Ah yes, and that way we can read on the boat on our way to the forges. Which I assume is some sort of labor camp, but we could be well-educated laborers.

[ A pause. ]

Oh, you mean after, don't you? Yes, I suppose it would fill in the gaps, for those who need it. [ He doesn't say it's a good idea, but... that's Zaunites for you. ]

[ Coming soon, two useless rat men write an equally useless pamphlet about the underworld— no, actually, that'd be an awful idea. ]

What? Yes, after! Who'd be handing them out over... over where we came from? I really don't think anyone would want to go back there.

[ Like Silco would ever help someone for free. ]

Although, you are aware there are likely types that might try and go out there to save any who trickle in, yes?

[ Hey, maybe he could, as a treat? No? No, okay, definitely not. ]

Oh. That's... Okay, you're probably right about that. I mean, I don't blame them if they do since those reapers were terrible but, also? I. I would not.

[ He'd be a scared little man with no way to fight what's out there, no thanks. ]

I think one encounter was plenty to cement that I would prefer to not encounter them again.

Mm, yeah, there's... definitely a "I need people bigger and scarier than me there" kind of feel to the whole. Dealing with a reaper. Thing.

I suppose the key will be finding enough funds to hire someone as an escort. At least that's my plan.

Funds... yeah... uh, good luck there, I guess. God knows I have no idea how to even get a job or. Anything like that.

[ There aren't exactly openings for weird hermits who can see the future. ]

Just find something people aren't getting, and provide it. I'm sure I'll find a niche they aren't getting, and start making money soon enough. It's not hard.
